The city was founded in 1211 by Teutonic Knights and was settled by the Saxons. The old town is full of history and is well worth a visit with the ancient city walls and the old fortifications.
The town square is thriving with life during the summer with open markets and numerous restaurants scattered down the streets leading onto the square.
The Black church which dominates the centre is the largest gothic church in Romania and between Vienna and Istanbul. It derived it’s name from the Great Fire of 1689 when the flames blackened its walls.
The population of Brasov is approx 280,000 and since Romania joined the EU in 2007 Romania and Brasov have seen massive investment.
